PROJECT OVERVIEW

Revaluation of propolis from the province of Granada: Development of a propolis extract nutraceutical with potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

The main objective of the project is to revalue the propolis produced in the province of Granada by developing a propolis extract nutraceutical, rich in phenolic compounds, with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro.

To achieve this main objective, the following specific objectives are proposed:

  • Characterize different propolis produced in Granada.
  • Optimize the extraction conditions of a propolis extract rich in phenolic compounds and with potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in vitro.
  • Microencapsulate the phenolic compound-rich propolis extract using spray drying.
  • Develop a prototype of a propolis extract nutraceutical with potential antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, evaluated by in vitro techniques.
  • Evaluate the production costs of the developed nutraceutical prototype.
Project Data:
  • Funding Entity: Granada Provincial Council
  • Modality: Minor contract
  • Consortium Partners: Individual project
  • Deadline Execution: 2023

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGIES EMPLOYED:

  • Determination and quantification of the main compounds present in propolis from the province of Granada using HPLC-MS.
  • Assessment of the in vitro antioxidant potential of propolis extracts through FRAP and ORAC assays, as well as evaluation of their indirect anti-inflammatory effect as inhibitors of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX2) activity.
  • Development of nutraceutical products from propolis extracts using the spray drying technique, employing various polymers as encapsulating agents to modify the release profile of phenolic compounds in the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Evaluation of the bioaccessibility of the phenolic compound profile measured by the INFOGEST methodology.
